Letterpress Printing & Blind Embossing

Letterpress printing is primarily ordered to add distinctiveness to packaging and other printed materials. Additionally, letterpress is used for the visually impaired, for example, on medical packaging.

What is Letterpress Printing?

Letterpress printing is divided into two types: Letterpress or debossing (pressing in), and blind embossing or embossing (pressing up from below).

Both pressing methods give the printed piece a third dimension, a tactile dimension, which provides a very special experience when holding the printed piece in hand.

For letterpress printing, a metal die needs to be prepared in advance. Depending on the size, die making costs 100-400€+VAT. This means that for such orders, the need for repeat orders is important; otherwise, the order becomes absurdly expensive for a one-time use.

Another difference is whether the pressing is done inward (down) or upward from below. Pressing upward adds another 30% to the price because a counter-die is required.
